In the second week of Future Engineers Camp, our students learned about circuits and wiring, voltage and electricity and the design process. The campers have received a challenge to create a wearable LED device – which will consist of a 9v battery for each set of 3 LEDs . Each student has 2 strings of LEDs (3 lights on each string), and 2 9v batteries. They can choose from a few different fabrics to create their wearable design, and we provide them with velcro, string, hot glue and pipe cleaners to fasten their circuits to the fabric. When the students are finished creating their wearable circuits, they can team up with up to 4 other students in the room and make up a dance to Lady Gaga’s song “Born This Way.” One member can either wear all of the groups’ circuits or all of the group members can wear their own and perform their dance together.

Stay tuned for videos of the dances!!!

The Future Engineers Summer Program is back for 2011! The hands-on STEM program is now funded by the PSE&G Foundation, with support from the College of New Jersey and the Boys and Girls Club of Trenton/Mercer County. The program is held at Columbus School in Trenton, and will last eight weeks. There are currently 50 students, broken into two groups, participating in the summer camp.

This summer students will be creating nametags, designing and crashing mag-lev cars, launching soda-bottle rockets, and creating a costume out of led lights and starring in their own music video wearing the costume.

Summer at the Center

The Summer of 2012 will be a very busy and exciting time for the Center for Excellence in STEM Education. Please contact us for further information regarding any of the following.

Summer Pre-Engineering Teacher Academy
July 8-13, 2012

Designed for rising high school seniors interested in understanding how problems are solved through principles of engineering design and who want to prepare for a fulfilling future as a pre-engineering teacher, this week long academy is geared toward teaching engineering and technological literacy principles and how to make a difference in this exciting and high demand profession. Participants will get an introduction to pre-engineering teaching and the profession, have the opportunity to meet with distinguished faculty, educational leaders, and teachers, experience making a difference in a student’s life first hand and participate in team building exercises in this creative atmosphere.

Sustainable Energy: Exploring Wind & Solar Power Systems
July 9-13, 2012

This five day institute for 24 middle school teachers will blend middle school science concepts for renewable energy with hands-on engineering designed to raise awareness of the challenge of using sustainable energy resources to meet world demand.

This is a collaboration grant from PSE&G and the New Jersey Science Teachers Association’s (NJSTA) eighth annual Maitland P. Simmons Memorial Award Summer Institute.

Engineering byDesign™ Summer Academies
July 2-27 and August 6-10  (full day sessions)

This workshop series provides year 1 Engineering byDesign™ New Jersey pilot cohort teachers with 40 hours of meaningful, hands-on training designed to prepare them to integrate the entire 8th grade (Technological Systems) or 9th grade/introductory HS (Foundations of Technology) course into their classroom curriculum for the first time this fall. These sessions are ONLY for teachers that have officially joined the EbD™ Year 1 Pilot Cohort.

CTEP Pilot Group Training Sessions
August 13-17 (full day sessions)

Schools who will be piloting the new CTEP curriculum in their schools beginning in September will be required to attend a pilot group training session to get background information and the first steps to beginning the new school year with this new curriculum.

Rollercoaster Workshop

On December 15th, the Center for Excellence in STEM Education held a workshop that showed educators how to build a rollercoaster out of paper, foam insulation, and any other found objects. Linda Burroughs, an Elementary Education professor at the College of New Jersey, specializes in Science Education for children. Professor Burroughs presented this workshop for about 25 attendees, consisting of local science teachers and other educators from New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

All of the workshop participants worked in groups and constructed their own rollercoaster that would successfully hold a marble for the entire duration of the rollercoaster’s track. Participants were encouraged to use different materials from around the room to elevate areas of the track and to make their coasters as unique as possible.
